Professor Dr. Nabil I. Khairy, Dean,

 Institute of Archaeology

It is known that the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is one of the richest countries in well preserved archaeological sites. Its heritage ranges from the early pre-historical times up to the present period without any cultural gabs.

The Institute of Archaeology, University of Jordan was established in 2008 which includes three main departments:

      -   Department of Archaeology.

Department of Tourism Guidance & Development.

- Department of Cultural Resources Management and Conservation.

Field discoveries, Preservation of monuments, tourism development, academic research and publications are among our essential aims.

It is important to awaken public appreciation to how protecting national heritage and developing more interest in archaeology among young generations. Besides, surface exploration and extensive epigraphical surveys are also needed.

It is also necessary to cooperate with the neighboring Arab countries to enrich our archaeological knowledge both in the field of excavations and publications. Also to cooperate with the international archaeological and tourism institutions to achieve our joint mutual goals in accordance with current laws and regulation of tourism and antiquities of the Hashemite Kingdom of  Jordan.

Both the Archaeological and Cultural Heritage museums of the Institute are located in the center of the university, very close to the Main Library. A great deal of the Museum`s collection came from our field excavations. Besides, an open museum, on the surrounding green terraces, has been established presenting many architectural elements, stone gates, sarcophagi, mile-stones, altars, dolmens, statues, and columns.
