Activities and Outcomes

Scientific

The Faculty members conduct high quality research projects in the different areas of pharmaceutical sciences including: medicinal chemistry (discovery of new drug candidates), pharmacology and toxicology (biological evaluation of drug entities), pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism (study of the fate of drug entities in the body), pharmaceutics (improvement of drug delivery in the body), pharmacognosy and phytotherapy (discovery of new therapeutic natural products).

In addition to the core pharmaceutical sciences focus of research mentioned above, some members of the Faculty are actively engaged in areas of research related to health and economic outcomes, clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice.

The outcomes of such scientific activities are regularly published in refereed scientific journals and has resulted in the registration of a number of patents both nationally and internationally. In addition, the Faculty of Pharmacy holds meetings and specialized scientific seminars to exchange scientific experiences in the different fields of pharmacy.

Technological

The Faculty of Pharmacy researchers work closely with the Pharmaceutical Firms in Jordan through the "Faculty- For-Factory" program. This program aims at linking academia with industry. Through this collaboration, the pharmaceutical industry benefits from the expertise and scientific research of the Faculty members which leads to the improvement of this important sector to world class standards.

A Drug Discovery Unit has been recently established at the Faculty of Pharmacy. The aim of this unit is to carry out advanced projects in the area of drug discovery using molecular modeling techniques.

Health

In 2008, the Faculty of Pharmacy established a Pharmaceutical Care Unit at the University of Jordan Hospital. This unit is the first of its kind in Jordan and is  currently providing clinical pharmacy and pharmaceutical care services to more than 2000 patients per month (both in- and out-patients).

The main aims of this unit are to:
1- provide clinical pharmacy services to ensure safe and effective use of medicines
2. provide patient education about medicines
3- conduct studies and research about the use of medicines.

Economic

By carrying out joint research projects, the Faculty of Pharmacy plays an important role in enhancing  the quality of the Jordanian drugs and in improving and advancing the pharmaceutical industry in Jordan. In addition, the expertise of the Faculty members help in reducing the running costs and increasing the capacity of the pharmaceutical firms.

In the area of health economics, the Faculty of Pharmacy has active members in different councils and committees, such as the Medicine Transparency Alliance (MeTA) council,  formed recently in Jordan that aims to develop, reform and improve the health sector by setting specific priority programs in order to increase transparency, availability, affordability and access equity of quality medicines in Jordan.

Environmental

The Faculty of Pharmacy is an active member in the committee for the safe disposal of harmful and hazardous substances and chemicals. This committee, working with the Ministry of Environment,  has recently put a classification for the substances and their toxicities and the correct methods of their disposal in Jordan in order to protect human health and safety and to protect the environment.

The Faculty has also recently assisted the University of Jordan in getting rid of around 10 tons of hazardous substances and chemicals.

Social

  • Organizing free medical days, in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine, for needy people in remote poor areas in Jordan. The Faculty of Pharmacy is responsible for collecting and ensuring the availability of free medicines samples for these free medical days.
  • Giving lectures to students at schools to raise their awareness about the different seasonal and communicable diseases.
  • Organizing and participation in fund-raising marches to support patients with diabetes and hepatitis.
