Founded in 2006, the Center for Women's Studies grew out of a successful interdisciplinary MA degree in Women's Studies, the first of its kind in the Middle East. The center follows the mission of the University of Jordan and is an institutional member of that body.
The Center provides graduate students with an opportunity to create, evaluate, and disseminate knowledge based on the status and experience of women in society. These students come to learn about influence of gender on social and political institutions and explore the intersection between gender, class, and other groupings.
Committed to supporting and promoting awareness of women's issues through its MA program and curricula, the center seeks to empower women and community members to become strong advocate for gender equity and social justice, and to embrace the responsibilities of leadership in the advancement and celebration of Jordanian women in particular and Arab women in general .Integrated into its commitment is the Center's goal of facilitating teaching, research, publication , and consultancy in women's Studies , feminism , and gender- related issues in Jordan and the Middle East .Along with fostering teaching and research at the university , the Center seeks to reach out into public areas where gender appears alongside other political and intellectual concerns.
