The Center for Strategic Studies (CSS) was established in 1984to carry out studies and research in the fields of regional conflicts, international relations and security. The CSS includes the following units:
- Public Opinion Polling Unit:
The aim of the Public Opinion Polling Unit at the Center for Strategic Studies is to provide information on the Jordanian society based on the results of scientific research surveys. The unit conducts two ongoing projects: the first one began in 1993 and assesses the case of democracy in Jordan, and the second, initiated in 1996, measures the expectations of citizens and their assessment of the performance of successive Jordanian governments.
- Economic StudiesUnit:
The unit aims to study the economic challenges facing the Jordanian economy and provide in-depth analysis on key economic issues facing the decision maker.
- Iranian Studies Unit:
The aim of the Iranian Studies Unit is to conduct multiple research projectswhich contribute to develop a better understanding of the Iranian society and their foreign policy. The unit also aims to develop in-depth and serious studies about Iran and regional security.
- The Center’sActivities:
The CSS held many conferences, seminars, and discussions on political issues, as well aslocal and regional topical, most notably:
- Conferences:
· Five discussion sessions were held on the subject of societal tensions, in collaboration with the Economic and Social Council.
· Conference on “Utilizing the Concept of Dignity in the Service of Justice in the Arab World”, in collaboration with the University of Birzeit.
· Conference on “Europe and the Middle East, in collaboration with the University of South Denmark.
- Seminars:
· Two discussion sessions were held with a number of Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan about the movement’s internal differences.
· Hosting theBritish Minister of State for Foreign Affairs for a panel discussion attended by politicians and decision-makers.
- Polls:
· Evaluating the performance of the government.
· Democracy.
· Elections.
· Human rights in Jordan.
· Jordanian public opinion trends around the concept of security.
The CSS is an active member in several Euro-Mediterranean networks, which includes a range of institutes and centers at 27 countries. The CSS is a member of the Arab Reform Initiative.
The CSS hosts a number of graduate students from international academicinstitutions, providing them with academic facilities (resources),while they conduct their research on Jordan and regional issues.
