Professor Ali Mahafzah

Professor of History at UJ’s Faculty of Arts, Dr. Ali Mahafzah earned his B.A. in Arts from Damascus University, Syria, in 1959, Higher Diploma in Education from Damascus University in 1960, Third Cycle Doctorate in Islamic Studies from Sorbonne University, Paris, in 1971, and a State Doctorate in Arts and Humanities also from Sorbonne University in 1980.


After graduating from Damascus University, Mahafzah started a career in teaching at a public school in Amman. Later, he shifted his career to diplomacy as he was appointed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served as a diplomat in the embassies of Jordan in Bonn, Tunisia, Algeria, Paris, and Cairo during 1962-1971.


Shifting back to education, Professor Mahafzah was appointed Assistant Professor at UJ in 1971, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1976 and to Professor in 1982. He served as Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Arts, 1976-1978, and Chairman of the Department of History, 1979-1980.


Professor Mahafzah assumed other positions outside UJ, including Vice President and President of Mutah University, 1982-1989, and President of Yarmouk University, 1989-1993.


Professor Mahafzah speaks three languages;  English, French and German, and is a published author and a highly accomplished scholar with numerous published research articles.


Throughout his profession, Prof. Mahafzah received several awards, including the Order of Independence of the Fourth Class, Jordan (1964), Order of the Iron Cross, Third Class, from the Federal Republic of Germany (1964), The French Legion of Honor, Knight class (1971), the French Order of Academic Palms (1988), Order of Independence of the First Class, Jordan (1994), and Order of Al Hussein for Distinguished Contributions (2008).
