At the invitation of the German Rectors' Conference, the Körber Foundation, and Universität Hamburg, UJ President Prof. Ekhleif Tarawneh represented UJ in the 2015 Hamburg Transnational University Leaders Council that was held at the University of Hamburg, Germany, during the period 10-12 June, 2015.
50 university leaders from Europe, North and South America, Asia and Africa convened to confer on the current situation of universities worldwide and prospects for their future development within the globalization process.
The university leaders conferred values that, in their views, should have an essential role in developing higher education institutions around the world in the context of globalization and its impact on the HE sector.
President Tarawneh was the only Arab university leader present at the conference.
Tarawneh presented a paper on Jordan’s higher education system including issues of institutional autonomy, academic freedom, acceptance, scientific research, community service, and response to labor market needs. He also highlighted challenges facing the sector, and ways to develop its inputs and outputs, especially strategies that have been implemented to meet the requirements of globalization and the knowledge economy era.
Conference attendees discussed a number of themes that aims at protecting the dual mission of the university represented by the generation of new knowledge for humankind and educating responsible global citizens, taking into account global developments in the post-secondary sector.
Aspects conferred at the conference include the core mission of the university, academic freedoms and university autonomy, differentiation in national higher education systems, access to higher education, financing university research and higher education.
