Hannibal Clinic has participated in breakthrough research in Interstitial lung disease, a chronic progressive lung fibrosis that results in acute respiratory failure and death.
The diagnosis is difficult because similar lung pathology shares similar radiological and histopathological features requiring open lung biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.
Principal investigator, Dr. Humam Farah, and chief of surgery, Dr. Michael Bukstein, teamed with leading investigators from top institutions around the United States to develop genomic signature that predicts unusual intersitial pneumonia which promises the development of molecular testing that could be applied to bronchoscopy samples, thus avoiding surgery in the diagnosis of this complicated disease.
The findings were published in the Lancet Respiratory Medicine in June, 2015.Dr. Farah is a pulmonary critical care and sleep medicine physician.
He sees patients in his office in the specialties department at the Hannibal Clinic.
He is a diplomate of the ABIM, holds certification in sleep medicine, critical care medicine, and pulmonary disease.
